Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest national park, is located near Kampala and Entebbe, making it an ideal spot for safaris and birding adventures. About 240 kilometres from Kampala and just 30 kilometres from Mbarara, it is easily accessible by road, with a travel time of 3 to 3.5 hours.
Covering 260 square kilometres, the park features diverse ecosystems, including rocky ridges and lush woodlands. The absence of lions allows for close wildlife encounters, showcasing species such as impala, zebra, eland, buffalo, oribi, hippo, and over 360 bird species, including the rare shoebill and pelican. Recently, giraffes were also introduced to the park.
Lake Mburo National Park is steeped in history and local folklore, particularly the tale of two brothers, Mburo and Kigarama. Located in the Nyabushozi-Kiruhura district, along with neighboring areas like Mbarara, Lyantonde, Isingiro North, and Kiruhura, the park offers a captivating experience for visitors. Activities include boat cruises, game drives, sport fishing, cultural tours to the Igongo Cultural Center, hiking, nature walks, bird watching, and horse riding, making it a must-visit destination for an extraordinary adventure in Uganda.
